Legend of the sleeping monk
The almoner friars from Charcas’ monastery that regularly visited Catorce, la Maroma, Matehuala and Laureles to collect the tydes received by the church at that time became a target of a band of thiefs. Putting aside their respect and veneration to all who wore the habit, they took the occasion and prepared an ambush, assassinating a lonely friar walking through the mountain. They buried his body in a cave and left no evidence of the crime.
Through the next days the absence of the friar was commented on and became an important matter to everybody. Then it was completely forgotten. After a while different versions of the apparition of a friar begging for mercy and calling the passers-by to show to them a grave in a rocky place of the hill.
The authorities were summoned; the friar’s body was unearthed and buried again with religious ceremonies. After this the mountain began to take the form of the body of the lying friar, who now lies down sleeping in peace. |
